Ophira Eisenberg may be the earliest Meg fan of them all (besides Meg’s mom, of course!) Meg and Ophira have been friends since middle school days in Canada, and remain close to this day.
This Mother’s Day, we caught up with Ophira to discuss her comedy and her podcast, Parenting is a Joke, her friendship with Meg, and her favorite (and not-so-favorite) parts of being a mom.
Ophira wears the Oversized Blazer and Blu's Pant in Taupe, and the Cowl Top in Black.
Q: Tell us about yourself. What are you up to?
A: I’m a standup comic. You can see me working at the clubs in New York almost every night. I host a podcast on iHeart Radio called Parenting is a Joke, where I talk to other standup comics and creative, funny people about what they’re working on, what’s going on with their creative projects, and what it’s like to do it all with kids in the mix.
Q: How long have you known Meg?
A: Since fourth grade, so you can do the math! It’s in the 30 to 40-year range…oh my god, I just fainted.
Ophira wears the Skinny Dress in Black.
Q: We hear you have a “boppy skirt.” Can you explain what that is? Is it your oldest Meg piece?
A: I do have one! I believe it is my most vintage Meg piece. It’s a very short flirty flared shirt with an elastic waist that you can pull on since Meg was not a fan of sewing. She was 14 when she made it for me. Mine is in a dark green floral with tiny, tiny different colored flowers, complete with a handmade Meg label on the front, hand-inked with a black fabric pen. It still fits, but I might have to wear pants underneath now!
Ophira wears the 60s Shift Dress in Black/White.
Q: What's the best part about being a mom?
A: Telling someone else what to do! Kidding! They never listen anyhow. I get a kick out of hearing this little being, my son, who is new to the planet, give me his perspective on life. The other day he said to me,
“You know, Mom, most parents think their kids are angels, but we're actually jerks." For the first time, I was speechless.
Recently, my husband and I got mad at my son for forgetting his glasses at school again, and my husband mentioned that he's forgetful and doesn't want our son to grow up to be like him. Our son replied, “So you're mad at me because of who you were in the past?" I thought, yup, that's pretty much 90% of parenting.
Q: What's the worst part about being a mom?
A: Telling someone else to do. And they never ever listen.
Ophira wears the Rounded Hem Shirt in White and the Carpenter Jean in Red.
Q: What does your dream Mother's Day look like?
A: Great question! I don't really know — A gel manicure with hand-painted portraits of my son on every nail? A nap on the perfect bed with a slight ocean breeze in my face? High-end cocktails with a collection of my most hilarious friends? A pill to erase my mind of all worries for 12 hours that has no adverse effects, is not addictive, bad for my health or heart, nor causes a hangover? My ass from when I was 23 years old? You know what? I'll just take some flowers. Lillies are fine. Sigh.
Q: Thanks for the hilarious interview, Ophira! Where can we find you?
A: I’m all over!
